‘Cloudsplitter’ by author Russell Banks is an incredible novel. It is recounted in the voice of Owen Brown, the last living child of the famous American anti-slave abolitionist and martyred antagonist, John Brown. The writer has re-created the social and volatile political atmosphere and panorama of the years leading up to the Civil War. Banks generates from fact, lore and legend characters who are larger than life: conflicted, misjudged, misunderstood, ultimately overwhelmed by their struggles, hardships and tormented over the ideals and goals of their cause. The central individuals associated with these momentous and significant tenets, more often than not become the victims of politically selective and deliberately altered documentation of historical events and their surrounding facts. This is a really well-written book–a fascinating journey that defines a very troubled period of a nation’s history.
