impaired charge
One person is facing charges following a single vehicle collision.
On January 20 at approximately 1 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call on a single motor vehicle collision (MVC) on Highway 551 in M’Chigeeng First Nation. Through further investigation, police determined that the driver had consumed an intoxicating substance, and an arrest was made.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital by Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services as a precaution.
As a result, the driver, Jamie Debassige, 33, from M’Chigeeng First Nation was charged with operation while impaired-blood drug concentration, fabricating evidence, use plate not authorized for vehicle, drive motor licence-no licence.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on February 25.

Vehicle rollover leads to impaired charge
One person is facing charges after a single vehicle collision in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI).
On January 23 at approximately 9 am, officers with the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP responded to a vehicle rolled over in the ditch on Highway 540 in NEMI. The driver was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services. Through further investigation, police determined that the driver had consumed an alcoholic beverage, and an arrest was made.
As a result, the driver, Jeffrey Shawana, 38, from M’Chigeeng First Nation, was charged with: operation while impaired alcohol, operation while impaired blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), two counts of driving while under suspension and driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on February 25.

Manitoulin OPP arrest three people at traffic stop
Three people are facing charges after a traffic stop on Highway 6 in Espanola.
On January 20 at approximately 5:45 pm, officers with the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP were conducting general patrol on Highway 6 in the Town of Espanola, when they were alerted to a stolen licence plate by the automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) system. A traffic stop was initiated, and the three occupants of the vehicle were arrested.
Additionally, police seized approximately nine grams of suspected cocaine, with an estimated street value of $900, approximately .20 grams of suspected fentanyl, with an estimated street value of $60, approximately $5,000 of Canadian currency, an axe and a knife.
As a result, the driver, Adrian Abel, 51, from Sudbury, was charged with operation while impaired by drugs, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, use plate not authorized for vehicle, driving while under suspension, driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available, drive with no insurance.
The passenger, Timothy Therrien, 52, from Dokis First Nation, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking.
The second passenger, Josephine Corbiere, 48, from M’Chigeeng First Nation was charged with obstruct peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, and impersonation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice.
The three accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on March 10.
All OPP patrol vehicles are equipped with ALPR technology. ALPR has proven to be an effective way to increase the efficiency of discovering and conducting investigations related to both traffic and criminal offences. It does so by detecting licence plates that are linked to occurrences such as wanted or missing persons, stolen vehicles, stolen and unattached plates, suspended/prohibited drivers, vehicles associated with AMBER Alerts and other serious occurrences.
Fail to stop incident results in 28 charges
One person has been arrested after police attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.
On January 17, at approximately 8:30 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP were alerted to a wanted person by the automated license plate recognition (ALPR) system. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled at a high rate of speed.
Greater Sudbury Police Services (GSPS) later located the vehicle, where it intentionally collided with the police cruiser before fleeing again. Shortly after, a traffic complaint came in about the same vehicle driving dangerously down the wrong side of the highway.
OPP officers located the vehicle on Highway 17 and successfully deployed a tire deflation device. During attempts to stop the vehicle, the driver intentionally collided with an OPP cruiser. The vehicle was eventually brought to a stop safely, and the driver was arrested.
Additionally, police seized suspected fentanyl, suspected crack cocaine and approximately $350 of Canadian currency.
Peter Trudeau, 41, was charged with: resist peace officer, escape lawful custody, failure to comply with police order-other than to attend court, six counts of assault a peace officer, two counts of assault a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous operation, operation while impaired alcohol and drugs, two counts of flight from peace officer, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, mischief, three counts of mischief under $5,000, failure to comply with probation order, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking-cocaine, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking opioid, entire plate not plainly visible, drive wrong way-divided highway, drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-excessive speed, possess more than one licence, drive without proper headlights.
The accused was to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail court in Sudbury on January 18.
