Panther Points
The Manitoulin Lady Panthers spent the weekend winning in North Bay at the Junior Lakers 27th Skate By The Lake Tournament. The action started on Friday morning with the Ladies meeting the home team. Panther Clytie Mishibinijima opened up the scoring with an assist from Charmaine Webkamigad in the first period. North Bay answered with a goal of their own in the second, but Emery Watson got the go-ahead goal, assisted by Brinley Watson to take the 2-1 win.
Game 2 on Friday afternoon was against the Smith Falls Cubs. Ava Corbiere netted the first goal of the game, assisted by Brinley Watson. The Cubs returned with a goal of their own in the second, and the game remained tied at 1–1.
The Lady Panthers saw two more teams on Saturday. Kapuskasing battled hard to keep the Panthers at bay until the 3rd period when Emery Watson scored two goals assisted by Ava Corbiere and Jordyn Corbiere, and Kara Atchitawens scored to take a 3-0 win. In the quarter final game against the Nipigon Elks, Charmaine Webkamigad took a pass from Gnaajwe Migwans and sealed a 1-0 win.
Sunday’s semi final was a rematch against the Kapuskasing Jaguars. Charmaine Webkamigad assisted Megan Roszell to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period, while Carlynn Simon and Ava Corbiere set Emery Watson up for a beauty goal to advance to the finals.
The Championship game was played on the big ice at Memorial Gardens against the Smith Falls Cubs. Ava Corbiere opened up the scoring in the second period but the Cubs were quick to even up the score. In the third period, Ava took a pass from Charmaine Webkamigad to pull into the lead, and one more goal from Emery Watson, assisted by Gnaajwe Migwans and Amara Wilson-Zegil, clinched the win and the banner for the Manitoulin Lady Panthers.
Local shines in Trappers win!
Kudos to Easton Assinewai after he and his North Bay AAA U-15 Trappers fought through injuries and overtimes to come away with the top title of the Kitchener Blueline U-15 tourney! Individually, Easton, their assistant captain, scored an overtime goal and won the whole tournament MVP! This weekend, Easton is in the Sault Ste. Marie Showcase Tournament, the closest he will be to Manitoulin in while.
International Cross Country
Congratulations to Maren Kasunich on her run this past weekend at the 2025 U SPORTS Championships that took place at Notre Dame Indiana at the Burke Memorial Golf Course. Maren runs for the University of Windsor Lancers who are ranked fifth in Canada and placed ninth in the event that attracted the best teams from Canada and the United States.
KO Show earns Star!
Kohyn Eshkawkogan earned a game star in the most dramatic way on Friday night in Niagara against the Ice Dogs. Kohyn and his Ottawa 67’s fought hard to tie the game with only 45 seconds left in the game. Then, Kohyn thwarted an attack in his zone and then initiated a break-out, passing it to a teammate and then streaked to open ice to receive a pass back and nobody could catch him as he fired the winning goal! Kohyn is tied with four other defencemen for 7th place in the whole of the OHL with 15 points and leads the 67’s with a +12. All of this and I had incorrectly aged the youngster last week who is still 16 until next week! Keep up the hard work, Kohyn.
First OCAA basket!
Hats off to Jaron Panamick who places for the Canadore College Panthers basketball team for draining his first basket against Humber College last week. Here’s to many more, Jaron!
Cadet Snipes!
348 Manitoulin Sea Cadets’ Petty Officer 1st Class Liam McLean, who achieved two 1.2 cm groupings and two 1.4 cm groupings in his recent rifle, team practice. What an exceptional demonstration of precision and consistency!
