### July 18, 1941 – September 4, 2026

A peaceful soul and proud Baba left us on September 4, 2026\. Born Gail Elsie Babuik to Elsie and Michael Babuik on July 18, 1941\. Both predeceased. A life in chapters. Raised in the tight-knit community of Coniston, Ont., in the Ukrainian tradition, with her stepfather, James Logan, and brother, Doug Logan. Family and friend gatherings were numerous and fun-filled events, with an accordion pulled out at some point! Aunts and uncles included Joe Mislinski, Stella Woronchuk (Steve), Sylvia Starcevic (Mike), Jenny Modesto (Galdino) and Helen Soroko (Walter), all predeceased. On her father’s side, the Ukrainian heritage continued with her stepmother, Vera, and brothers Robert and Bruce Babuik. Mom had a special lifelong friend, Jenny Dominick, whom she knew from childhood. Marrying Bill Walker, her extended family included Helen Watkins, Herb (Carmen) Walker, Floyd (Bernadette) Walker, Rodger (Jean) Walker, Joan (Wesley) Brooker and Lynda Walker. A registered nursing assistant, with the birth of Bradley and Brent, she became a full-time mom and was always at home to raise and care for us in the family home in Naughton. At the age of 47, she “retired” to Gore Bay and helped and supported Dad with his maple syrup business on the family farm. Although she lost our father, Bill, at age 55, she built a new life with her partner, Don Cotton, travelling and spending many years — and many “happy hours” — with friends in Leesburg, Florida, in the winter and enjoying summers on Manitoulin Island until his passing in 2020\. From 1995 to 2005, Gail’s family grew with six grandchildren: Taylor, Josh and Lindsay, born to Brent and Troy Catherine Walker; and Liam, Aaron and Lauren, born to Brad and Faith Walker. In 2026, she became a Prababa to Ellie, born to Taylor and Nan Walker. Throughout her life, she was one to keep in contact with friends and family, no matter how far away, with a smile you could feel on the other end of a phone. Although her health declined, even in long-term care she was always quick with a smile and an impromptu Ukrainian language lesson for the caregivers at Countryside Extendicare. Heartfelt thanks to the staff for keeping her comfortable during her stay. A devout Anglican, she kept her faith strong at Christ Anglican Church in Lively and All Saints Anglican Church in Gore Bay. A memorial will take place during Thanksgiving weekend, with details to be announced. Please direct a donation to your favourite charity or perform an act of kindness in her name. Cremation services provided by Simple Wishes of the North and Crystal Crematorium.
