Gore Bay youth places second at area public speaking competition

NEW LISKEARD— April Torkopolous of Gore Bay placed second this past weekend at the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking area competition held in New Liskeard.

“I performed well, but lost by a couple of points for speaking too fast,” shared April. “If the first place winner is unable to attend the provincial competition I will take his place.”

April is a Grade 10 student at Manitoulin Secondary School. Last month, April placed first representing Zone H3 at the District H Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking competition in Sudbury. Her speech is about Canada—Canada’s 150th birthday, what Canada was like 150 years ago, Canadian stereotypes and Canada’s future as a country.

April also made it to the zone competition two years ago for her speech about going to high school, placing third.
