GREEN BAY—There were a total of 21 pumpkins at this year’s Har-Cor Diesel and Farm Supply customer appreciation barbecue and pumpkin weigh-in held last weekend.
The largest pumpkin belonged to Maddie Heise, age 8 of Little Current, which weighed in at 101 pounds.
Second place went to Bob Daniels and his 99 pound Russian giant, third to Kowan Orford at 95 pounds and fourth to Matthew Wilkin with his 94 pound Atlantic giant.
“The secret to my big pumpkin is chicken poop,” laughed Mr. Daniels. “It’s the first pumpkin I’ve grown, but I’m happy with how it turned out.”
Matthew Wilkin, age 9 of Little Current, is no stranger to the pumpkin weigh-in and along with his brother Alan has had some top contenders over the years.
“There’s not much of a secret,” said Matthew of how he got his pumpkin to a whopping 94 pounds. “I planted it in my grandma’s (Pat Wilkin) garden and made sure it got lots of water.”
Six-year-old Kasey Bowerman’s Atlantic giant was one of the top pumpkins as well at 88 pounds.
“I got a lot of help from my dad,” said Kasey. “We planted it in cow manure and made sure it got lots of water.”
Following the weigh-in, participants and spectators enjoyed chocolate milk or coffee, hot dogs and treats.
