EDITOR’S NOTE: This week marks the first installation of I’m Your Neighbour which will introduce an employee from a Manitoulin Island business each and every week. I’m Your Neighbour reminds us that when we ‘prosper together, shop Manitoulin,’ we’re also supporting our neighbours to keep gainful employment right here on Manitoulin Island, something that is particularly important following the prolonged lockdown and uncertain times resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
LITTLE CURRENT – Laura Dionne of Little Current has been at GG’s Foodland for almost 15 years. She’ll be celebrating this milestone in October.
The produce manager moved back to her childhood Manitoulin 27 years ago. Many people will recognize her by her maiden name, Jaggard. Laura is the granddaughter of the late Harry Jaggard, whom many people will recall.
In her spare time, Laura enjoys working in her vegetable garden, camping and ATVing with her husband Al.
“We like to drive the backroads with our bikes,” Laura says, smiling at the thought. She recounted their last Thanksgiving which they spent traversing the backroads on their ATVs, all the way to the Gibraltor Road picnic area in Central Manitoulin where they enjoyed their picnic Thanksgiving dinner. “The leaves were changing, the sun was shining—it was a gorgeous day,” Laura recalls. “It took one-and-a-half hours to get there.”
She recommends that others give the all-terrain sport a try.
As for her job as produce manager, Laura said she enjoys meeting new people, seeing familiar faces and bringing them the goods they enjoy.
Laura is the proud mom of Elizabeth, who lives on Manitoulin, Daniel of Richmond Hill and Quinn-lynn of Essex. She is the proud grandma of four (soon to be five in August) and two grandchildren from her blended family.
