Manitoulin athletes to represent area at Ontario floor hockey championships

Snowshoer, skiers and curlers bring home medals from Special Olympic Provincial Winter Games

MANITOULIN—Manitoulin Special Olympic (MSO) athlete success this winter continues as five Islanders prepare for the Special Olympics Ontario 2015 Provincial Floor Hockey Championships in Ottawa May 7-8. This exciting news comes after MSO athletes excelled at the 2015 Provincial Winter Games held in North Bay earlier this year.

“Five of our athletes will be joining players from Sudbury to represent the area at the Provincial Floor Hockey Championships in May,” MSO coach Janet Anning told The Expositor. “The Island hockey players include Brock Case, Peter Jansen, Dylan Daville, Dayne Tipper and David Gagnon.”

Earlier this year MSO athletes performed well at the 2015 Ontario Special Olympics Winter Games held in North Bay, bringing home several medals.

Regan Millsap, Rebecca Strain, Andrew Splawnyk, Randy Corbiere and Jeff Panamick represented A division curling for Northeastern Ontario and won gold after a close battle against the GTA district team from Weston.

As well, snowshoe athletes Dayne Tripper, Meghan Holtze, Kelsey Mellan and Matthew Bedard brought home six gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

Island Nordic skier Mary Claire Howell also faired well, winning two gold medals.

“The athletes did so well,” said Ms. Anning, who was joined fellow MSO coaches Judy Olacke, Nancy Leeson and Ellen Holroyd at provincials. “Many achieved personal bests as well as medals. It was an exciting weekend and we are so proud of them all.”

MSO is anxiously awaiting confirmation as to who will participate for Team Ontario at the 2016 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, NL from February 29 to March 6, 2016. “We should be finding out any day now,” concluded Ms. Anning.
