Manitoulin’s Katie Harper shines in Legally Blonde the musical

Manitoulin’s Katie Harper starring as Elle Woods in Sudbury Secondary School’s production of Legally Blonde on now until Saturday, May 2.

SUDBURY—Little Current’s Katie Harper is currently starring in Sudbury Secondary School’s production of Legally Blonde.

The vibrant Grade 10 student previously attended Little Current Public School before being accepted into Sudbury Secondary School’s arts education program two years ago.

Known throughout Little Current for her beautiful, powerful voice, Katie’s singing was a staple at past Little Current Remembrance Day ceremonies, among other events.

During her Grade 9 year at Sudbury Secondary School, Katie laid the groundwork for starring in this year’s production by demonstrating that there was more to her than just a great voice.

“We did a smaller production my first year and I wasn’t a lead, but I worked hard, showing the director, Madame Roberge, that I was outgoing and dedicated,” explained Katie. “I also worked on improving my acting, singing and dancing so that not only was I the best I could be this year, but madame knew I was dependable and a hard worker.”

All of her hard work paid off when Katie was cast as Legally Blonde’s lead Elle Woods—a blonde sorority girl from California who shows that she is more than a ‘dumb blonde’ when she attends Harvard Law School.

When asked what Katie thinks of her character or if she relates to her, she responded, “I don’t really relate to her Malibu sorority side, but once she evolves (at law school) you can start to see the real her and I can relate to that side of her.”

“I like that Elle is an underdog—people don’t expect much out of her, just thinking that she is a ‘dumb blonde,’ but she surprises them and herself,” explained Katie. “I can relate to the ‘dumb blonde’ because I am a blonde myself and in the past I think people have underestimated me, but I’m here now in an accomplished arts program, pursuing my dream.”

Katie, along with the entire cast and crew of Legally Blonde, have been busy practicing since early this year with a rigorous rehearsal schedule four times a week for two hours after school and then recently four times a week for five to six hours.

“It’s been busy, but I love the production,” exclaimed Katie. “I never get bored of it.”

Since opening last weekend the production has gotten rave reviews from major Sudbury media outlets, even director Line Roberge has nothing but positive things to say about Katie’s performance.

“Katie Harper is a young Barbara Streisand in the making,” said Ms. Roberge. “Do not miss your opportunity to see this young woman in her first starring role.”
