M’CHIGEENG—M’Chigeeng First Nation held its 30th annual powwow this past Labour Day weekend.
There were over 60 registered dancers, in a variety of styles.
The head drum was Black Bull, with co-host drum Good Time Ojibway. The master of ceremonies was Paul Owl, while Chris Pheasant was the co-master of ceremonies.
The head female dancer was Celina Cada-Matasawagon and the head male dancer was Dale Matasawagon. The head elder was Marilyn Debassige, while the head veteran was Howard Debassige and the arena director was Falcon Migwans.
Specials included a hand drum competition, a team dance, long hair competition and a fashion show by Bruno Henry.
The eagle staff carriers were Raymond Corbiere with the Wiikwemkoong Eagle Staff, Geordan Lewis with the Wikwemikong High School Eagle Staff, Pierre Debassige with the M’Chigeeng Youth Eagle Staff and Jessie Beaudin with the M’Chigeeng Eagle Staff. Flag carriers included M’Chigeeng Chief Linda Debassige with the M’Chigeeng Community Flag and Howard Debassige with the Veterans Flag.
Chief Debassige thanked everyone for attending the powwow and to the families, visitors, drums and volunteers that help put the powwow together.
