MSS Kids in the Halls

Happy New Year! A New Year’s joke for you:

The year 2020 is going to be filled with so many puns about perfect vision. I can’t wait to see them all.

It is the first week back to school since the Christmas Break! As happy as that sounds, it means there are only three weeks left until exams. We are down to the crunch! It is time to finish up those last few units in each class and begin to work on the culminating projects.

On Monday, December 16, the Mustangs boys’ hockey team played against Confederation High School and won 4-2. Way to go, boys!

The 50th Annual MSS Awards Night was held on Thursday, December 19. Over $50,000 worth of bursaries were given out to deserving alumni! Thank you to all the businesses, organizations and individuals who made donations towards the event and thank you to everyone who helped make the night run smoothly.

On the last day before the break, in the spirit of Christmas, students were treated to a Winter Carnival and movie. Some activities that were available to students throughout the day included board games in the library, karaoke in the music room, an open gym, hot chocolate in the foods room, a movie in the cafe and much more.

For the first hockey game of 2020, the boys will play against Lo-Ellen at the McCrory-Countryside arena tomorrow, Thursday, January 9 at 3:30 pm. The boys will be back in action on Friday, January 10 at the NEMI Rec Centre against Confederation at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on our Mustangs!

On Friday, January 10, the OELC (Ontario Education Leadership Centre) Committee is hosting a Grade 8 information day. The event is called 4’d 8s (48). Grade 8 students from five elementary schools across the Island will be coming to MSS to learn about high school life, elective classes and extracurriculars. This event was created after five students (Ethan Theijsmeijer, Rachael Orford, Jocelyn Kuntsi, Katie Chapman and Laura Orford) went to Orillia to an OELC retreat in October and came back with hopes to increase extracurricular participation by students in the coming years.

The girls’ hockey team’s first game of the year is on Monday, January 13, against Espanola High School in Espanola at 12 pm.

There is only a little over a month until the MSS musical production of “Bye Bye Birdie!” Everyone involved is working very hard in preparation. Stay tuned for information about tickets. Show dates are February 13, 14 and 15.

A note to Grade 8 students’ parents that MSS’s Information Night is scheduled for Thursday, February 20 at 6 pm.

Joke of the week: An iPhone and a firework were arrested on New Year’s Eve. One was charged and the other was let off. Upcoming events include, hockey games, exams, and much more!

Until the new year, “Dream and Believe. Learn and Achieve!”
