Mustang girls seek hockey playoff action

MANITOULIN—The Manitoulin Mustang girls’ hockey team headed into the playoffs this week ranked sixth in the Sudbury District Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association (SDSSAA) standings.

The Mustangs were scheduled to play against Sacre-Coeur yesterday (Tuesday, February 17) at 3:30 pm in Sudbury to determine which team would move on for the semi finals.

“If we win, we move on to a best of three series,” said Coach Mike Meeker last Friday. “The girls are pretty excited going into the playoffs. They have come so far as a team since the beginning of the season.”

“We knew from the start that we had a young team this year, the youngest in the league,” continued Mr. Meeker. “A lot of teams in the league have a few super stars on their team that score all the points, but we don’t have that. The whole team has had to work hard together, everyone contributes.”

The team was having goal tender issues prior to Tuesday’s game, which Mr. Meeker said would be a make or break the playoff game.

Regardless of yesterday’s game, Mr. Meeker said on Friday that he was “really pleased with the team overall and what a great season they have had.”

“I want them to finish the season on a positive,” added Mr. Meeker “I feel confident that if everything works out with our goalie we can take the championships.”
