Mustang boys face off against St. Ben Bears in series final
MANITOULIN—The Manitoulin Secondary School Mustang Boys hockey team will battle the St. Benedict Bears in the Division II final series this week.
In the best of three series, the games have been scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 at 3:30 pm at the Countryside Arena in Sudbury; Wednesday, March 1 at 5:30 pm at the Little Current Recreation Centre and if necessary, Thursday, March 2 at 3:45 pm at the Countryside Arena.
“The boys are in good spirits going into the final series,” said MSS boys’ hockey coach Steve Doane. “We know that we can play with them from our past game against St. Benedict which was the 4-4 tie here in Little Current back in January. We got behind in that game and battled back to take the lead at one point. It is going to be important that we start well in these games and not give St. Bens that early lead.”
“The challenge will be dealing with their speed at Countryside Arena, which has an Olympic size ice early surface,” added Coach Doane. “The other key is going to be getting traffic in front of their goalie and banging away at the rebound goals. He is the kind of strong goalie that usually stops pucks if he can see them. We are healthy with a full lineup and our goaltending has really improved each week this season, so I’m fairly optimistic.”
Coach Doane said that the Mustangs have been working on their two power play units and hope it will pay off and they can convert some big goals for the team.
“We are looking forward to the series and think that we can give them a good battle,” concluded Coach Doane. “Hopefully a good crowd shows up Wednesday at 5:30 pm in Little Current and cheers the boys on. They always seem to up their game in front of our fans.”
