SHEGUIANDAH—There were a record number of flyers this past Saturday at the Manitoulin East Municipal Airport’s Young Eagles Day.

“We had 79 kids this year,” said airport manager George Dobbs. “That is about 20 more kids than we have had in recent years, which is great to see. We had six pilots, including an R44 helicopter flown by Todd Thomas of Sudbury that joined in. Our pilots this year were from Timmins, Sudbury, Oshawa and Espanola.”

“It was a great day,” added Mr. Dobbs. “Our whole thing is about having a safe, fun day for the kids and we did that.”

“I’m pretty nervous and excited,” said 11-year-old Ethan Leblanc of Manitowaning, as he waited for his turn in the air. “This is my first time.”

“It was great,” said Sebastian Belanger, age 8, after his flight. “It was cool. I liked seeing Little Current and I definitely want to go again next year.”
