LITTLE CURRENT—Registration is now available for the Little Current Yacht Club’s (LCYC) Learn to Sail Program, which starts after Canada Day.

“We will be starting with the Taste program the week after Canada Day (July 4-7),” explained head instructor Bryce Mastelko. “The Taste program gives kids a chance to try sailing over a couple days.”

The Taste program will run Tuesday, July 4 to Friday, July 7 from 9 am until noon, or there will be a second session from 1 to 4 pm the same days.

A second set of Taste sessions will be held Tuesday, August 8 to Friday, August 11 from 9 am to noon or from 1 to 4 pm. The four-day, half-day course is $100.

Bryce is 18-years-old and currently completing his Grade 12 at Manitoulin Secondary School. He will be attending Laurentian University in the fall for forensic science and chemistry.

“I started in the sailing program with the LCYC when I was eight or nine,” explained Bryce. “By Grade 8 I had gotten as far as I could with the club and I worked two summers with the camp. Two years ago I was the assistant instructor.”

Bryce said he is pleased to be back with the club as head instructor and has taken many courses in order to obtain his new position including First Aid and CPR, boating licence, boat safety and CanSail certification so that he is able to teach both Level 1 and 2.

“I was sad I missed last summer, so I’m excited to be back on the water,” he said. “I’ve been through the program (as a student) and I know the struggles the club has had trying to find instructors, so I’m really happy that I’m able to coach. I’m proud to be taking on this role.”

CanSail Levels 1 or 2 will be running weekly: July 10-14; July 17-21; July 24-28; and July 31 to August 4 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Each week-long session is $250.

New this summer is Saturday CanSail 1 or 2 July 8, 15, 22, 29, August 5 and 12 from 9 am to 3:30 pm for $250.

“We are also doing adult sailing for teens or parents by request,” said Bryce.

Early bird registration ended on June 19, but there is still a five percent discount for LCYC members or for those who register for two or more courses.
