LITTLE CURRENT—The Little Current Recreation Centre was full of parents and community members Sunday as Skate Canada Manitoulin skaters showed off their skills at the annual figure skating carnival themed ‘Skating Through the Decades.’
The show kicked off with a big number from the 1970s with the skaters skating to Carol King’s ‘Where You Lead.’ The skaters included Alexis Lewis, Brooklyn Ferguson, Cameron Meawasige, Dakota Mishibinijima, Elizabeth Wood, Jasmine Clark, Kali Francis, Katie Chapman, Kendra Jordison, Kristen Bowerman, Morgan Dedman, Nicole Boyle, Shaylee Taylor and Sofia Fessenden.
Skate Canada Manitoulin Coach Madison Burton performed a solo next, which she will be taking to competition at the Skate Ontario Adult Champions in April.
Arlo Owl, Ava Mandigo, Eden Lester, Jack Bently, Kamia Bowerman and Leo Shonias demonstrated their skating skills, working their way through obstacle courses on the ice. The young skaters were dressed as jungle animals and skated to The Token’s ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight.’
Kali Francis performed a beautiful solo next, followed by a group skate to The Bangles ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’ by Brooklynn Ferguson, Cameron Meawasige, Dakota Mishibinijima, Kristen Bowerman, Morgan Dedman and Sofia Fessenden.
Kendra Jordison performed a solo skate to a mix of songs from The Phantom of the Opera.
Jasmine Clark and Shaylee Taylor brought disco to the ice with The Bee Gees’ ‘Stayin’ Alive,’ followed by Alexis Lewis skating a solo to a cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah.’
Elizabeth Wood also performed a solo to an instrumental piece.
Brooklynn Ferguson, Morgan Dedman and Sofia Fessenden captured the vibe of the 70s with their skate to Rose Royce’s ‘Carwash.’
A large group number wowed the audience featuring Alexis Lewis, Elizabeth Wood, Jasmine Clark, Kali Francis, Katie Chapman, Kendra Jordison, Nicole Boyle and Shaylee Taylor to the 1990s Verve song ‘Bittersweet Symphony,’ followed by ‘Jailhouse Rock’ performed by Casey Bowerman, Haileigh Simon, Isaac Souliere, Kaelen Thompson, Ryland Corbiere, Trenton Trudeau and Xander Thompson.
Jasmine Clark took to the ice, skating a solo to an instrumental version of Journey’s ‘Small Town Girl.’
The Beatle’s ‘Let it Be’ was danced by Alexis Lewis and Kendra Jordison, followed by Katie Chapman giving a dynamic skate to a Glee version of Barbra Streisand’s ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade.’
Cameron Meawasige, Dakota Mishibinijima and Kristen Bowerman boogie woogied on the ice to the 1940s hit ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ by The Andrews Sisters.
Nicole Boyle executed her solo to an instrumental song, followed by Kali Francis and Katie Chapman making magic on the ice to The Lovin’ Spoonful’s ‘Do You Believe in Magic.’
‘Splish Splash’ by Bobby Darin was performed by Casey Boerman, Haileigh Simon, Isaac Souliere, Kaelen Thompson, Ryland Corbiere, Trenton Trudeau and Xander Thompson.
Shalyee Taylor took to the ice performing a beautiful solo, followed by Elizabeth Wood and Nicole Boyle rocking the rink to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ ‘I Love Rock n’ Roll.’
Madison Burton skated a second solo, followed by another crowd favourite, the father daughter skate.
This year’s skaters included Alexis and Allan Lewis, Brooklynn and Jim Ferguson, Cameron and Nishin Meawasige, Kali and Kerry Francis, Kendra and Dale Jordison, Kirsten and Brad Bowerman, Morgan and Randy Dedman and Sofia and Steve Fessenden. The group skated to The Temptations song ‘My Girl.’
The finale saw all skaters return to the ice for a final skate to Martha and The Vandellas ‘Dancing in the Street’ and a group bow.
It was another great carnival for Skate Canada Manitoulin with organizers thanking the volunteers, skaters and coaches for their time and commitment to making the event a success.
