Third annual Wiky All Star event brings community and students together to celebrate Canada’s national game

B division winners at the Wiky All Star tournament were the chief, council and friends team.

WIKWEMIKONG—Wikwemikong students and community members alike enjoyed the third annual All Star Event last week, taking in great hockey and winning some sweet prizes.

“We had eight teams registered in the tournament this year,” explained organizer Jason Thibault, “The Wikwemikong Health Centre, Wikwemikong chief and council, the Wikwemikong Development Commission, the Wikwemikong Nursing Home, two teams from Wasse Abin High School, Pontiac School and the Wikwemikong Police.”

Mr. Thibault noted that the school teams were a mix of students and staff.

“Throughout the day we had 500 to 700 people attend the games at the arena,” added Mr. Thibault. “It went really well. We also had lots of great prizes donated from some awesome sponsors so all the classes went home with something.”

The All Star Event was started three years ago as a fun winter activity for students and community members. This year it was also the kick off to Wikwemikong’s Winter Carnival.

“Our sponsors included Nipissing University, the Wikwemikong Heath Centre, EastLink, Giant Tiger, Spruce Glen, Manitoulin Transport, Bank of Montreal, Wikwemikong Nursing Home, Wikwemikong Tribal Police, Hillside, Andy’s, WAHS (Wass Abin High School) Student Council, Dell and the Wikwemikong Development Commission,” continued Mr. Thibault. “Every student went home with something, from a Giant Tiger gift card to water bottles.”

The Wasse Abin High School team were the A Champions, while Wikwemikong chief and council were named the B champs and the Wikwemikong Development Commission the C champions.
