Victims Services hosting Power of Collaboration conference May 16

MANITOULIN—“Power of Collaboration” is the theme of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, taking place across Canada from May 11-17. Victims and Survivors of Crime Week is held to raise awareness about issues facing victims and survivors of crime and the services, programs and laws in place to help them and their families. Manitoulin Northshore Victim Services is proud to be hosting an event to commemorate the week in the Manitoulin Island community.

“The Victims and Survivors of Crime Week is an important event for our community because we want people to know that there is a community network that cares and is available to those who have had acts of harm done against them or a loved one,” said Amy Collins, executive director of Manitoulin Northshore Victim Services (MNSVS). Those in the helping and criminal justice professions are working together to ensure work is being done through a trauma informed approach and practical support is being provided in the immediate aftermath following the acts of crime or tragic circumstance.

Manitoulin Northshore Victim Services will commemorate Victims and Survivors of Crime Week with a Power of Collaboration conference on May 16 at 9 am at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre. This event will provide an opportunity for community and community partners to connect and learn about some of the work being done to address issues facing victims and survivors. It is also important for community members to come together and share in the knowledge of what is being done, what more can be done and what is available to the communities we serve, said Ms. Collins.

This event is being funded by the Victims Fund, a grants and contributions program administered by the Department of Justice Canada. Funds are available to provinces, territories and non-governmental organizations for programs and services that give victims and survivors of crime a more effective voice in the criminal justice system.
