VON encourages Island seniors to socialize through day programs

MANITOULIN—Island seniors looking to step outside their routine and try something new are encouraged to attend Manitoulin’s VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) Canada adult day programs hosted weekly in Little Current, M’Chigeeng and Wikwemikong.

“It is a chance for seniors to socialize—get out of their homes and visit with others,” explained Sherri McDougall, coordinator of the Manitoulin VON site. “Every month there is a different theme and the crafts and activities are centered around that, such as St. Patrick’s Day this month and Easter/Spring next month.”

The program is $12 per day, which includes lunch, snacks, tea and coffee and supplies. Activities include games, puzzles, bingo, crafts and light exercise.

Staff who work at the day program are specially trained with a recreational background to provide social and recreational activities, VON’s information brochure explains. The staff also works closely with participants and their families to ensure that the goals of the program are met.

The program runs 9:30 am to 3 pm on Tuesdays in Little Current at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Wednesdays in Wikwemikong at Amikook Centre (the elders centre) and Thursdays in M’Chigeeng at the Wellness Centre.
