WHITEFISH RIVER FIRST NATION—This week marks the 45th annual Whitefish River First Nation Winter Carnival.
The fun got underway on Tuesday with the opening and the carnival pageant.
Tonight, Wednesday, February 14, celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Nightingales Ball Team spaghetti dinner at 4 pm at the community centre. There will be a Valentine’s Day poem reading and contest at 5 pm, followed by a cribbage tournament at 7 pm.
On Thursday, February 15, try out your curling stills at the outdoor rink starting at 5 pm. There will be a Smash Brothers video game tournament at the health centre at 5 pm and bannock and babies at 6 pm at the Seven Fires.
Friday, check out the winter games at Shawanosowe School starting at 10 am. Strap on your skates and head to the outdoor rink for a skating party at 5 pm. Hosted by the Shawanosowe teachers, there will be music, a bonfire, hot dogs and hot chocolate. Later, head to the community centre for a scrabble tournament at 7 pm.
On Saturday, Chi-breakfast and the canteen will open up for sales at 8 am. Registration for the events such as the poker run and crown and anchor starts at 10 am, as does the penny raffle sales, selfie challenge and mini car races. At 11 am there will be a toddler obstacle course.
The human bubble hockey tournament (teams of five) will get started at noon on the outdoor rink. There will be an exhibition game between band staff verses health centre staff. Please register you team on Friday.
From noon until 3 pm at the community centre there will be free popcorn, cotton candy and face painting.
The Backhoe rodeo will take place at the Birch Island Fire Department parking lot from noon to 4 pm.
At 3 pm, there will be a slap shot, speed contest, accuracy contest and beat the chief contest at the outdoor rink.
The snow shoe races get underway at 4 pm at the Seven Fires, as will the great chili cook off judging.
Bring your loonies and toonies to the auction at 5:30 pm—five great prizes to be auctioned off.
Cap off the day with the family dance hosted by the health centre.
Sunday, breakfast will start again at 8 am, while registration opens for events at 9 am. There will also be arts and crafts and a display contest starting at 9 am and minnow races and WRFN trivia starting at 10.
Snow golf will start at the community centre at 11 am. The backhoe rodeo will also start at 11 am at the Birch Island Fire Department parking lot, running until 2 pm.
Noon will see the start of plank races, the log sawing contest and nail driving contest.
At 1 pm there will be a tug of war at Dnakmigziwinteg, as well as bare foot races and the photo contest judging (pets, elders, funny, scenery and WRFN classic).
The judging of the snow sculpture contest will take place at 2 pm. Participants are asked to sign up ahead of time at the registration table.
The tea boiling contest will also start at 2 pm, followed by the prize bingo at 4 pm.
Be sure to submit your suggestion in the ‘Name the Rink Contest’ by noon on Sunday. Judging will take place between 2 and 4 pm.
