MANITOWANING—The 3rd annual Manitoulin Deer Show is taking place this Saturday, August 27 in Manitowaning from 10 am to 3 pm at the Assiginack Arena and Fairgrounds, where organizers have the day jam packed with activities for kids and adults.

The Kids’ Wilderness Challenge starts at 10 am, and kids will be put on teams of two to go through a series of events testing their knowledge and skill in the great outdoors. Any age is welcome and it’s sure to be a fun time for everyone with a big thank you to the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) for help running it.

Perry’s Gun Shop from Sault Ste. Marie is back again as well as Kukagami Jack’s. Rylan’s Clothing Garage will be in attendance and BJ’s and Addison’s will also have a great display alongside Tracks and Wheels. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and QDMA will also be at the ready to answer questions and will also be presenting a lecture. Fuel the Fire TV will have a booth alongside Valley Guiding and Outfitters.

The Deer Show is also hosting a Wild Game Cook Off with the winner walking away with a brand new barbecue! The dish doesn’t have to be venison, but does have to have wild game in it.

Once again, we are asking hunters to bring in their mounts with the chance of winning a firearm. This year the committee has created a Manitoulin Hall of Fame, so bring in your mount, it doesn’t have to be the biggest, they will be looking for interesting ones as well.

What a variety of speakers this year! The committee has booked Keith Munro, travelling from southern Ontario. Keith is a PhD candidate/wildlife biologist who will share some great knowledge with the audience. Locals Mike Phillips and Ian Anderson will give a talk on predator control as well.

There will be a great display of equipment outside and Peter Craig will be on hand to answer all your field plot management questions.

The Deer Show is not only for experienced hunters, if you are new to or visiting the Island and would like to learn more about the famous Manitoulin deer hunt come on over to the Assiginack Arena.
