KAGAWONG—Overcast skies and the threat of a thunderstorm did not deter approximately 30 dogs and their humans from attending a birthday party hosted this past weekend by volunteer members of the Billings Recreation Committee and friends.
“Today,” stated Committee member Carol Corneau, “is a party for the dogs.” Ms. Corneau brings her dog Bear to the park on a regular basis and is still surprised that some residents of the Island are unaware of its existence.
The dog park started as a pilot project in July of 2011 is now being used daily with a regular play date held every Sunday at 1 pm.
Master of Ceremonies Sandi Hurcomb shared that “Bark in the Park would not be a success without the generosity and ongoing support of the community and people like Nancy Milburn, animal behaviouralist, Julie McDermid and her team from Magical Paws Pet Therapy, Diana’s Dog Grooming from Espanola, who donated nail trimming, to Pet Save and Lori from Sudbury, who donated a mini van full of pet food as prizes for the games held during the afternoon.”
Small and large dogs alike ran, played and got to know each other. Game hosts Jill and Kelly put the dogs through their paces in Sit Stay, Dress Up and Wiener Dunk. Every dog took home a stuffy and treat bag from the party.
Ms. Hurcomb wrapped up the afternoon by thanking the Recreation Committee members and event co-ordinator Carol for hosting another great afternoon.
