Letter: Another pitch for a chunnel replacement for the swing bridge

Keep the old bridge with a toll for upkeep and maintenance

To the Expositor:

I expected there would be some controversy on whatever proposal was recommended for the swing bridge. Personally, I think the swing bridge has significant heritage value and should be retained and upgraded but I also think access to Manitoulin Island needs to be improved.

My proposal is to adopt an underground tunnel to the downtown area of Little Current which would enhance the local business activity but invoke a toll for its use for cost recovery of the installation and future maintenance and refurbishment the swing bridge and continue to allow its use toll-free. People coming to the Island then have choices—easy access but for a cost of a toll or a free ride—but it may cause a delay.
