‘The pressure to pay for the short sighted costs of these proposed facilities is ludicrous’
To the Expositor:
With the proposal of the new arena in Mindemoya I feel I need to weigh in and ask council to define their options. The arena needs to come down, that’s a given. However, the Community Centre and the Old School are both landmark buildings that need to be protected.
The cost of this new proposed facility has an immense price tag and one whose tax base does not support its build. Taking in the facts that Providence Bay needs the arena for the historic Fall Fair, closing this facility would entail building another band shell on the property.
The community centre in Mindemoya is a unique and underutilized facility. Its costs to maintain are minuscule to the costs of this proposal.
Infrastructure for affordable housing could renovate the Old School and keep its historic facade. This hasn’t even been entertained by council.
The loss of the ball field can be overcome.
However the pressure on the communities to pay for the short sighted costs of these proposed facilities is ludicrous. I don’t believe the property owners of Carnarvon should be saddled with such costs.
