Northeast Town public library bids adieu to librarian

It will be a challenge to find a comparable replacement

To the Expositor:

The Northeast Town Library held a farewell party last Thursday afternoon for the outgoing Head Librarian, Jake Marion. He had been running the library since January 1, replacing Judy Kift, who held the position for 30 years. Everyone knew that it would be a challenging transition.

We were among the 40 to 50 patrons, volunteers, staff who gathered to say goodbye and good luck to Jake. Library board chair Ned Martin gave an account of the young librarian’s many achievements during his short tenure. It was difficult to contain our disappointment that things didn’t work out differently.

No doubt, the community of NEMI realizes that to attract the quality of leadership needed to manage our library according to today’s expectations takes adequate funding. It also takes good will and cooperation among all the players (library board, municipal government, employees, patrons, volunteers, taxpayers) for a small town to hold on to a good librarian.

Like many others in the area who benefitted from his generous service, we regret having to say goodbye to Mr. Marion so soon. Unfortunately, because of limited financial resources, the board will have a difficult time finding a suitable successor with comparable knowledge, energy and enthusiasm.
