GORDON—The third annual Providence Bay and Spring Bay Lions Club golf tournament was again this year a huge success!

“This was our third year of holding this tournament,” said Lions Club member Chris Bryan at the awards ceremony after the 18-hole tournament, held July 12 at Manitoulin Golf in Gordon/Barrie Island was completed. “Over the past two years we have raised $15,000 and this year’s tournament will bring us over $20,000 for the three years.”

“We want to keep the tournament going as long as we can,” said Mr. Bryan.

The tournament drew fifteen teams of four participating. “On behalf of the Lions Club we want to thank everyone for taking part again this year,” said Mr. Bryan. He pointed out the 50/50 draw was the biggest to date, with $2,330 worth of tickets sold.

Proceeds raised from the tournament will benefit the Providence Bay Curling Club Youth and Junior Curling program and the 1st Western Manitoulin Girl Guides SEGPR. Mr. Bryan noted the Lions Club had received $3,000 in sponsorships for the tournament, and with $2,400 in registration fees for participants. Many prizes were donated to the Lions Club for a silent auction held during the day.

As for the tournament itself, the Amy Wright team, which included Amy and John Wright, Sherry Marois and her son Josh, won the mixed division with a score of 69, three under par.

The Chad MacKenzie team, which also included Joey Eadie, Greg McCourt and Josh Favaro won the men’s division with a nine under par score of 63.

The Sonia Morningstar team, which included E.J. Murray and Marti Murray, and Sandy Bonbled, won the ladies’ division with a score of three under par.

The prize for the ladies’ shot closest to the pin on the second hole was won by Tara Dantouze (a shot only four inches from the pin), while Matt Moggy won the prize on the men’s side.

The prize for the most honest team went to the Brian Mitchell team.

Mr. Bryan acknowledged the support from several participants that have played in all three of the Lions club tournaments including Ellen Holroyd, Pat Burke, Chris Anderson, Duane Deschamps, Mike Abotossaway, Billie Abotossaway, Brad Anderson, Keith Jacques and his team, Eric Theriault, Dan Ryan.
