Memorial walk for Antz Mandamin killed in hit and run takes place Sept. 16

WIIKWEMKOONG—The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service is renewing its call for information related to the death of Anthony Samuel Mandamin, who was killed in a hit-and-run on September 16, 2006.

Mr. Mandamin, who was 25 years old at the time, was struck and killed around 6 a.m. while walking on Kaboni Road after leaving a house party in the village of Wiikwemkoong. The driver failed to remain at the scene.

This year marks 19 years since Mandamin’s passing. To honour his memory and raiseawareness, community members will hold a memorial walk on Sept. 13, beginning at 9 am at Pat’s Café and ending at noon at Pat’s House on Webkamigad Road. A feast and giveaway will follow. A sacred fire will also be lit at Osawamick G’Tigaaning from September 12 to 13 for prayers and reflection.

Police continue to pursue leads in the case. Chief Ron Gignac said officers will join the Mandamin family and community members in the walk to honour his memory and draw attention to the case. “We know that Anthony was struck by a motorized vehicle in the foggy conditions of that morning,” Gignac said. “It is our hope that someone will come forward soon with the truth—whether it be the driver or a witness who withheld information. The best thing anyone involved can do is come forward and relieve the burden that has plagued them for so many years. Anthony’s family deserves closure, and healing cannot begin until the truth is known.”

Gignac said some may have stayed silent out of fear at the time, but he urged those with knowledge of what happened to speak up.

“I appeal to the conscience of anyone with knowledge of what happened,” he said.

“Please, do the right thing — for Anthony, for his family, and for your own peace of mind.”
