Manitoulin Island remains largely undiscovered

That despite being named by CBC as a “must visit” destination

MANITOULIN—Manitoulin Island has been listed as one of the top 12 Canadian Islands most people have never heard of!

The online site of Travel, Culture, Life on December 12 listed, “12 Canadian Islands most people have never heard of.”

“Canada’s coastline stretches for more than 200,000 kilometres, making it the longest in the world. Hidden within this vast expanse are thousands of Islands that remain off the radar for most travelers,” reported Travel, Culture, Life.

“Most Canadians could name a handful of popular islands without much thought. But the country holds far more than the usual suspects. Some of these lesser-known places have fascinating histories, rare wildlife, or stunning scenery that rivals that of more famous destinations,” continued Travel, Culture, Life.

Manitoulin Island was included in the list of 12 islands including the Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Fogo Island, Newfoundland Labrador, Haida Gwai, British Columbia, Anitosti Island, Quebec, Pelee Island, Grand Manan Isle in New Brunswick, Ile d’Orleans, Quebec, Saturna Island, B.C. Magdalen Islands, Quebec, Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island and Herschel Island, Yukon.

“Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world, located in Lake Huron. It spans more than 2,700 square kilometres and contains over 100 inland lakes of its own. The island is home to several First Nations communities and offers hiking trails, beaches, and cultural experiences. Despite its size and beauty, it remains relatively unknown outside of Ontario,” reported Travel, Culture, Life.

On CBC earlier this year, Manitoulin Island was named one of the Must Places visitors to Canada should visit.
