Bayer wins National title

Congratulations to Evan Bayer of Calgary (originally of Mindemoya) who just won the Canadian Duathlon Championships in Penticton, British Columbia! The national championship format consists of a 10km run followed by a 40km bike ride and then the cherry on top is a 5km run. Now, I will bow down anyone that can swim, bike and run any type of triathlon distance as you have to engage every single muscle in your body in that effort to get to the finish line—I can barely swim to save my own life let alone do it as some sort recreational activity.

However, I need to offer kudos to the du-athletes like Evan who can burn their legs on a run then hop on a bike and further tighten their legs only to stumble off and finish up with another run!? Mr. Bayer ran the first 10km run leg in just over 34 minutes then zipped through his 40km bike in 55 minutes (yep, 43 km/h!) only to end up running a 5km “fun-run” in 17 minutes. On average his run-time was seventeen kilometers an hour! Any one of his legs would have put him at the front of any one of a 10k run, 40k bike or 5km run but to be able to put them all together is what it takes to be the Canadian champion: congratulations, Evan!

Great Canadian Kayak Challengers!

One of the major Ontario kayak racer destinations over the last number of years has been Timmins for their annual Kayak Challenge. Little Current paddler Steve Arthurs has been a long-time participant and this year he recruited a couple more to the fold. Robyn McGauley set a new “personal-best” as she placed 7th in the 5km novice race! Steve’s son Rhyis Arthurs set his own PB in the 3km youth race and placed second! The now, veteran Steve lowered his personal-best in the 16km Elite taking fourth and then also dropped his 6.5km Open time, allowing him to earn the bronze medal. Hats off to all on a great weekend!

Panthers on the prowl

The Atom Panthers have organized a double-header, exhibition trainer for September 11. The young Panther squad will be lacing up the skates on the neutral ice of Espanola against the Copper Cliff Minor AA side. If you are itching to get in some hockey you can still swim comfortably game-times at 11 am and 3:30 pm.

Lacrosse ace scores

Congratulations to former Wikwemikong player Bo Peltier who has continued to snipe goals for the Iroquois West team that recruited him to play in the international junior lacrosse league. Just being edged out in their latest tournament Bo still amassed eight goals and two assists in their seven matches.

Foam Fest fanatics

One of the local teams that was missing from last week’s mention of Wasaga Beach’s Foam Fest was another Island team dubbed: “Fast, Faster, Fastest.” Although team members would not divulge who was given any of the three monikers, I doubt it mattered as the squad all seemed to be having a super time. The event included hazards that like the floating-mat, lily pads on the Georgian Bay, super-foam bouncy castles and water slides etc. etc. Congratulations fast, faster or fastest notwithstanding amongst the team of: Shannon Drouin, Anna Love, Heather Corbiere, Stacey Claxton, Connie Leeson, Leah McAllister, Alicia McAllister, Jessica Gosselin, Cindy Tarr and Linda Olivier.
