We reported last week about the temporary test of the cell tower recently erected north of town on Highway 551, but since then the tower has been turned on full time residents and visitors alike can now enjoy Bell Mobility cell service and Long Term Evolution (LTE) broadband data services anywhere in the village or on the beach.

We also reported last week about the big machinery on the Mindemoya River just north of the bridge. We incorrectly thought that the reason was for the slated bridge repairs but have since found out that it had nothing to do with the bridge. The wonderful volunteers of Manitoulin Streams were hard at it completing another improvement to the Mindemoya River. They reinforced the river banks to stop the erosion and make it easier for the salmon to swim up the river to their spawning grounds. They receive little government funding and work very hard at raising donation funds. They also provide a lot of educational events aimed at youth. Kudos to all the volunteers.

The river improvements were done just in time, it seems. The salmon have moved into the bay and the boats can be spotted lazily trolling back and forth for their catch of the day. We’ll try and keep you updated on this annual occurrence.

We were happy to hear about the soft opening that was held at the new store 2nd Time Around. The grand opening was held Saturday, September 3. Merdick McFarlane has opened this new venture in the old truss plant building. Stop in and get yourself a deal.

It is with sadness that we report about the death of Rick Jackson (Newf), a long time resident and friend of Providence Bay. His celebration of life service was held in Little Current on Saturday, September 3. Condolences go out to all his family and friends.

We’ve also been informed that Dawn Young received her call for the gift of life. She is at the hospital in London on September 2 and will be going in for surgery shortly. They are still fundraising for medical and travel expenses that will be incurred. If you go the Go Fund Me webpage you can search for Double Transplant for Dawn Young and help in their fight. We’re all praying for you Dawn.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who helped to keep the flowers that beautify our community watered. It takes a village to raise some flowers.
