Exciting new races planned

Organizers of the 2016 Killarney Mountain Lodge Fall Classic are proud to announce a new running event taking place from the heart of Killarney. Athletes will lace them up on the morning of Sunday, October 2 for one of three classic races, a 5km, 10km and 21.1 half marathon. Each run features plenty of road running and the 10km boasts both road and some gravel trails through the scenic fall vistas.

In this inaugural run, not only will the scenery be spectacular, but also local excitement and support is anticipated. General Manager of Killarney Mountain Lodge, Kelly McAree, says “There’s a lot of excitement building in the community and we’re thrilled to host this classic fall running event to support the work of the Children’s Wish Foundation and to provide runners with a new fall running venue.”

The lighthouse landmark entrance at Killarney Mountain Lodge will act as the start/finish line for the races and the Lodge will provide runners with first class amenities. A pasta buffet is scheduled for Saturday, October 1 to help runners build their carbohydrate intake and a post-race fish fry will build back much needed protein after the runs are completed.

Participants are asked to sign up for the races the morning of the run. Information about the course routes will be posted on the Killarney Mountain Lodge Facebook page in advance. While this is not an officially timed event, and the runs will be self-timed, bib numbers will be provided. The entry fee is $25, with proceeds going to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The half marathon race starts at 8 am, the 10km at 8:30 am and finally the 5km gun fires at 9 am.

Coaching seminar being finalized

Here is a quick heads-up about a coaching seminar slated for late October in Little Current. The top-notch coaching staff who are to be confirmed soon will have experience on AAA, Junior A and OHL teams. Seminar focuses will include: practice preparation, game prep, season prep, offensive and defensive systems and coaching goalies. There are also plans as well to have a sports psychologist make a presentation. Stay tuned for all the details soon.

Panther alumnus’ son playing AA

Former Manitoulin Panther Chris Case’s son Greyson is playing with the Nickle City Jr Sons AA novice team this year. In their first tournament in Richmond Hill this past weekend they lost in the finals. Greyson won the “Worker of the Game” in their second game. Greyson and the Sons will be playing in an exhibition game against the Atom Panthers on September 18 in Little Current.

Speaking of the Manitoulin Panthers, as they continue to celebrate over 30 years of rep hockey there will be several initiatives through the year to celebrate the present and past of the organization.

Three Island players back on the Express

Former Panthers themselves it is great to see three Manitoulin players back on the Junior A Espanola Express. Welcome back to Nevada Waindubence, Tyler King and Mitchal Payette. Island lad Gregory Trudeau Paquette will also play in Espanola but only when his team, the French River Rapids are visiting. Best of luck to the four of you!

Condolences

We wish to express our best wishes to the friends and family at the loss of young athlete, William Lovelace. William was a superb, all-round competitor in many sports but truly excelled in hockey.
