Manitoulin youth charged with drug offence

The Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Gore Bay teen with a drug offence following a search warrant executed in Gore Bay. 

On the afternoon of November 30, members of the OPP, assisted by an OPP canine team, attended the youth’s residence with a search warrant following a drug trafficking investigation. As a result of the search, marijuana, cash, and other drug accessories were seized.

A 15-year-old from Gore Bay was arrested and charged with possession of a substance included in schedule II – marijuana for the purpose of trafficking – under three (3) Kg, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drug and Substances Act.  

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on February 21, 2017 at 10 am in Gore Bay. 

OPP traffic stop catches prohibited driver

On November 22, a member of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 540, at the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. The driver of the automobile was found to be prohibited from driving anywhere in Canada as a result of a previous Criminal Code conviction. 

As a result of this investigation, a 74-year-old male of Gore Bay has been charged with driving while disqualified by court order, contrary to section 259(4) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on December 20.

Occupants charged with drug possession at OPP ride check

In the early evening of November 25, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check on Highway 540 in the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. A tractor trailer was checked and open liquor was found within the cab. Following further investigation, a controlled substance was also found and the three occupants were arrested. 

A 50-year-old male of Aweres Township, Ontario has been charged with possession of marijuana under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act and driving a commercial motor vehicle without a licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

A 33-year-old male of Elliot Lake has been charged with possession of marijuana under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and a 32-year-old male of Elliot Lake has also been charged with possession of marijuana under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The three accused are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on February 7, 2017.

RIDE check results in impaired driver

In the early morning hours of December 4, 2016, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) check on Cardwell St. in Manitowaning when a sport utility vehicle (SUV) approached the location. An officer spoke with the driver and determined he had consumed alcohol.

As a result of this investigation, a 55-year-old male of Wikwemikong has been charged with impaired driving, and exceeding the legal limit of alcohol in his blood contrary to section 253(1)(a) and 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on January 17, 2017.

The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
