KAGAWONG—Billings Township council will look at reforming a Go Green committee in the new year.

This comes after council, at a meeting last week, formally considered and accepted, with regret, the resignation of another member of the former Go Green committee,

Committee member Chris Theijsmeijer informed council in a letter, “I have been volunteering with committees related to waste management and go green issues with the township for about 12 years now. It has been an interesting experience to go through various incarnations of committees and to see the landfill drop-off process improved.”

“However, at this time I feel I must resign from the Billings Go Green committee. I feel we will not be able to effectively follow through with our terms of reference as they are. I find I am busy with a variety of activities and I need to focus my energy in other areas where I feel I can be more effective,” wrote Mr. Theijsmeijer.

As was reported in the November 29 Recorder, three other members of the committee had resigned, citing what they felt was a lack of support and backing of council on ideas and possible solutions being brought forward for council to consider and decide on. This included looking at funding sources for an alternate building for municipal office space/a new multi-purpose facility that would include the municipal office.

After council had formerly accepted, with regret, Mr. Theijsmeijer’s resignation from the committee, Mayor Ian Anderson said, “we need to discuss our next move concerning a Go Green committee. We should be looking at this early in 2020. I know council is committed to the go green concept. Perhaps we could revisit the terms of reference, and re-advertise for local residents to come forward to form another Go Green committee.”

Councillor Sharon Alkenbrack said, “we need to look at the terms of reference (for the committee). I also think we need to look at this again, and agree we should look (at restarting a committee) at this early in 2020.”

Councillor Sharon Jackson said, “I agree we should revisit forming a committee in 2020, and have the terms of reference reworked.”
