MANITOWANING—For the first time in several years Assiginack Township council has agreed to again support the Manitoulin Family Resources (MFR) Emergency Food Assistance Program-2025 Christmas basket campaign.

“2021 was the last time the township contributed to the Christmas basket campaign,” said Councillor Rob Maguire at a council meeting last week. “I think we can definitely find space in our budget to provide some support this year.”

“The food bank and thrift store has been providing emergency and seasonal food supports to the residents of Manitoulin district for over 36 years,” wrote Colleen Hill executive director. “Last year, thanks to the generosity of community members, businesses and organizations, our expectations were surpassed. Close to $100,000 was raised and was put toward the cost of generating 600 baskets and gifts for families and individuals.”

Ms. Hill explained each basket is tailored to the size of the family.

Ms. Hill wrote, “we hope to raise a minimum of $100,000 during this years Christmas campaign to meet increasing demands, as well as the increased cost of food and transportation. All surplus funds from the campaign will be used to meet the food security needs in our community throughout the year.”

“It affects people in our municipality as well as other communities on the Island,” said Councillor Maguire.

“I am in agreement we should support this program,” stated councillor Hooper. She suggested as well MFR should be allowed to put a bin at the municipal office for food contributions toward the program.

“How much money would we want to provide?” asked Councillor Dwayne Elliott, with $500 being suggested and approved by council.
