Assiginack takes top honours in Legion Remembrance contest

MANITOULIN—Four schools participated in the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day contest, which has students submit posters, essays or poems on remembering Canada’s soldiers and war effort.

Out of the participating schools, Little Current Public School (LCPS), Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS), Assiginack Public School and Lakeview School, Assiginack had 12 winning entries out of a possible 20.

The Legion saw a total of 110 entries, which included colour and black and white posters, poems and essays.

In the posters division, black and white, Bethany Wesno of CMPS placed first in the intermediate division while Morgan Wall-Varey, also of CMPS, took top honours in the junior category.

In the colour poster category, Annabelle Manitowabi of Assiginack placed first in intermediate, Lauren Ferguson, also of Assiginack, took top honours in the junior category and Delany Bridgeman placed first in the primary division representing CMPS.

In intermediate poems, Denver Leeson of Assiginack was first, and Lauren Ferguson of the same school took the top spot for juniors.

Joel Lovelace of Assiginack was the winner of the intermediate division for essays, while junior student Jasmine-Hrynyk-Seabrook, of Assiginack, also placed first.

All the first place winners have been forwarded to the next level for further judging at that level with all involved anxiously awaiting the results.
