Local runner, finalist at Canada Games
Brodie Pennie has been doing an amazing job preparing for his second, cross country season for his University of New Brunswick Reds team. Hailing from Assiginack, the sophomore distance runner was way out east for the 2025 Canada Games held in St. John’s Newfoundland. Competing under the New Brunswick flag for his school, Brodie ran a 3:54 and finished fifth in the second heat of the 1500m, just one second behind the final’s eventual winner. Brodie had a strategic race in the final, finishing in eighth place overall with a 3:53! Congratulations, Brodie and good luck in Cross Country this fall!

North Channel Bike Park
Speaking of the Park, their Facebook page has a bunch of great pictures and videos of the amazing progress on the Honora Bay area trails a dedicated Mountain Bike destination. In one video you can ride-along for an idea of what there is to experience. There are carefully constructed berms and flowy humps and great vistas!
Organizers report that some lines are at the trail finishing stage but can still use raking, shaping, packing, and cleaning up. They would appreciate any help we can offer. You can reach out through the Facebook page.
MARC updates!
This past week the Mindemoya Arena Repair Committee (MARC) proudly presented a cheque for $23,362 in front of the arena’s West wall, the section of the building that required urgent repair.
The contribution was made as part of the Municipality of Central Manitoulin’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) Stage 2 application, which supports multiple repairs at the arena, including: The West wall repair, Removal & reinstallation of the low-e ceiling for a full structural inspection and ammonia valve repairs for the ice plant.
MARC recognizes that this milestone represents the hard work of countless volunteers and the generosity of our community through fundraising events, donations, and in-kind support. Together with the support of NOHFC, and our community, we are ensuring the Mindemoya Arena remains a safe and thriving space for future generations.
Call out for fall hockey registrations!
Every community is hoping to solidify their teams for the upcoming season. It is a huge, headache for local minor hockey associations as September arrives even well before ice is on the horizon. Your local has decisions and duties that cascade down from their numbers. The NOHA has to have their numbers, schedule makers, referee assignments, ice-time slots, etc. etc.
The Gore Bay Bruins have out their reminder. They need more players in U11 (2015, 2016), U13 (2013, 2014) and U18 (2008, 2009, 2010) to make a team. Registration also open for U7 (2019, 2020, 2021), U9 (2017, 2018) and U15 (2011, 2012).
“If you plan on playing hockey in Gore Bay, register now before it’s too late! Please help us spread the word so every child gets the chance to play.” Bruins’ local President Nick Lane is also looking for used equipment donations. “We hold an annual equipment exchange later in September/early October, it is open to any Island hockey family that is in need and in preparation for this, we are looking for used equipment to be donated.”
