Mountain-biking Mustangs!

The second race of the high school mountain bike season took place at the Walden trails on September 25th. The Manitoulin Novice team improved on their debut performance and now sit in second place overall. Nathan Quackenbush dominated the race, finishing first with a commanding lead—fast enough to outpace all of the Junior riders as well. Teammates David Joyce (10th), Jonah Moffat (12th), and Waylon Hartin (15th) all climbed the standings from their week one results.

The MSS Senior team also had a strong day, moving into third place overall. Bradley Slaght led the way in 5th, with Isaac Quackenbush in 9th, Jacob Swartz 21st, and Jeff Harper 22nd.

The third race of the season will be held at McLean’s Park in Assiginack on October 2nd, giving the Manitoulin riders a chance to perform on their home trail.

Local rides with the Wolf Pack

Congratulations to Dane Gibeault who rides for the Walden Wolfpack team. They won the Fall Epic 8hr relay at Harwood Hills. Dane and teammates completed 16 laps when their last lap couldn’t be completed due to mechanical failure. Fortunately, they had built a significant lead and still won the 3-4 person, 20-29 age category!

The Island Elementary 3-Pitch Tournaments took place on Thursday having been pushed back a day due to iffy, weather forecast from Tuesday.

At the Junior Tournament in M’Chigeeng, Lakeview School played host. It all came down to the Assiginack Allstars edging the Charles C. McLean Colts to earn the win. Hats off to Coach Joanne Atchitawens and her team: Cora Griffin, Simon Paige, Walter Webber and Jackson Barnes.

Kyle Palooza-2

The birthday celebratory tournament for Kyle Baibomcowai was a whirlwind event on Friday and Saturday two weekends ago. The birthday-boy’s team finished as runners-up to the $3,000 winning squad captained by Jonas Aiabens! The fun started Friday night with four games and then 10 on Saturday with the champions not crowned until 10PM!

Sons of Pitches in Gatineau!

In other Wiikwemkoong ball news, the all-star Son’s of Pitches team were in a tournament in Gatineau Quebec this past weekend and scooped the $5K prize! It was tough getting a full team together with only eight players on Friday. They drafted three more last minute including Dawson Leblanc-Peltier, Jordan Cooper and Chris Manitowabi. From that point there were so many injuries they were glad they did, needing everyone to secure the title! Hats off to the team of: Danial Madahbee, Jordan Cooper, Jonas Aiabens, Gregory Trudeau-Paquet, Gerard Baibomcowai, Michael Aiabens, Lyle Baibomcowai, Kyle Baibomcowai, Landon Manitowabi, Dawson Leblanc-Peltier and Chris Manitowabi!
