Local rink represents at Canadian Club Curling Championships

Skip Jordan Chandler, Vice Kyle Chandler, Second Ronald McQuarrie and Lead James Bicklel strongly represented their Little Current Rink with a with a three and three record in the round robin portion. In the double knock-out playoffs the foursome did not advance to the finals but definitely put Manitoulin on the map and the rink gained more experience on the biggest stage. Congratulations, guys!

U-18 curling up and comers!

Having local people reach such heights in competitive sports always helps others see that a path is possible, even from Manitoulin! As mentioned last week an Island U-18 rink have proven they are on the right path if they ever choose to go there!

Here is further information on the Wahl Rink, Eric Wahl, Spencer Johnston, Devon MacKelvie and Parker Johnston and their win at the Tri-Town Toyota Youth Bonspiel. There were actually nine teams competing and Manitoulin’s entry was the only team that went undefeated. They had four close games against skilled U18 teams from New Liskeard, Timmins and Rouyn-Noranda. What a great start to the season!

Next up for that team is the Ontario Winter Games Qualifiers in New Liskeard on Dec 12-14.  In addition, the Wahl Rink’s club in Providence Bay has 10 junior curlers headed to Sturgeon Falls this coming weekend for a U15 Rockfest Qualifier and Youth Development Day.

Ko Show in the “O”!

Kohyn Eshkawkogan and the Ottawa 67s are rolling with a 17-6-1-1 record. They’ve had a heavy road schedule and have already hit mid-season having played 17 of their 34 road games already.

Over the weekend, after handling the Kitchener Rangers 5-3 in a fast-paced game, they faced the Owen Sound Attack to round out another road trip. After being outshot 27-13 and being down 2-1 after two periods, the Ottawa 67s made a third period push but couldn’t solve Owen Sound’s Carter George in time to send it to OT.

Although their 10-point game streak ended, they are 3rd in the Conference and in the league. They are playing disciplined hockey and are the second least penalized team in the league. Kohyn has two goals and 20 points on the year, good enough to have him 7th in the league amongst the defence and to lead the 67s back end as the top point producer.

As tickets are already becoming limited, supporters are encouraged to get their tickets early for the Sunday, January 11th, 2:00 game when Kohyn and the 67s are in Sudbury to face the Wolves for the last stop on their only Northern Road trip of the season.

Panther Points

The Manitoulin Lady Panthers faced the Soo Jr. Greyhounds U18A in a double header on Sunday in Blind River. The girls battled in two very physical games and came out with two more wins under their belts.

While the girls were away, the U15 boys hosted a double header at home against the East Nipissing Vipers. They took both games with scores of 4-1 and 5-3.

The U11 Panthers travelled to Sudbury to meet the AA Lady Wolves for the first time in their season. The U11 squad finished off their weekend with a 6-4 win.

Winter Track

With the official Indoor track season starting soon, Saraya Eshkawkogan’s days training at LCPS and MSS are paying off. At the York Lions, Red & White meet last Thursday and Friday, Saraya performed very well in Triple Jump and Long Jump in the pre-season, warmup event.

She is on an excellent trajectory to do very well in her second USports season. In addition to her horizontal jumping events, she is excited to be making her USports High Jump debut in a few weeks! Good luck and keep up the hard work, Saraya!
