Hot at the Frosty!

The annual Frosty Cup hockey Tournament took place with a very familiar winner in the Women’s division. The Northern Storm first entered the tournament in 2015 as “Northern Storm” and since renamed as team “Badlands”. However they continue to enter this tournament as Northern Storm as a nod to the Wiky Northern Storm and the ladies who brought the youngster along in hockey. Shout-out to Shelley Trudeau, Ruby Trudeau and others.
The Northern Storm won in in every year from 2015 to this 2025 event except of course 2020 and 2021 when there was no tournament due to the pandemic.
Congratulations to players: Aaliyah Osawamick, Victoria Trudeau, Niibin Pitawanakwat, Danielle Shawana, Gerrilynn Manitowabi, Deidre Debassige, Natasha Cooper, Amber Lewis, Dion Lewis, Sonya Stencell, Kennedy Lanktree and Alycia Shawana!

More Manitoulin curlers get invite!

The competitive and educational, Rockfest curling event has an even stronger Manitoulin component coming up in January. There were two ways to qualify. First, four boys and four girls from Northern Ontario qualified at the in-person qualifier in Sturgeon Falls. That was the path that Shawn McKelvie, Parker Johnston, Devon McKelvie and Spencer Johnston qualified.

The other way was by having a skills competition at your home club and uploading the scores to a leaderboard. Then, the top five girls and top five boys in Northern Ontario, who hadn’t already qualified, were then offered spots.

From the Providence Bay club, Charlie Orford, Alice McIntosh, Sarah Joyce and David Joyce qualified that way.  So, Providence Bay will have eight curlers at U15 Rockfest East, out of the 18 Northern Ontario spots! There will be a total of 72 athletes at the event, from Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.

The event will take place January 22-24, 2026, hosted at the Dixie Curling Club in Mississauga and will be held in conjunction with the opening weekend of the 2026 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, allowing the curlers opportunities to compete and watch Canada’s best women’s curlers at the national championship.

U-18 Team rocking

U18 boys’ team of Eric Wahl, Parker Johnston, Devon McKelvie and Spencer Johnston continue to turn heads around the North with their very young rink. The boys had a great weekend in New Liskeard on Dec 12-14 at the Ontario Winter Games qualifiers. With a total of seven boys’ teams competing for one qualification spot at the Ontario Winter Games, Team Wahl was the runner up! They went 3-1 to make it to the finals, but couldn’t come up with the win against a very strong team that has curled at the national level.  A great experience though and they represented Providence Bay very well!

Next up for all Prov curlers is a U15/U18 bonspiel in Espanola on January 10-11. They will have an amazing, six teams participating from Providence Bay. Best of luck teams and congratulations on all your training.

 Panthers prep and celebrate

The Manitoulin Panthers U11, U13, U15 and U18 teams would like to wish all of their fans and supporters a safe and happy Christmas break.

The U18 Lady Panthers will be busy over the next couple of weeks planning and preparing for their Super-weekend on January 10th and 11th at Nemi Recreation Centre. The Panthers can’t wait to see everyone in the stands in the New Year.
