Column: MSS Kids in the Hall

Although the school year is winding down, exciting events at MSS are just getting started. Let’s take a look at what the Mustangs got up to this week!

MSS athletes made our school proud at the NOSSA Track and Field Championships last week, with several standout performances and many achieving personal bests. Let’s hear it for the following medal winners: Ethan Ense, 1st in shotput; Sadie Bridgeman, 1st in long jump; Xavi Mara, 1st in the 3000m and 2nd in the 1500m; Arabella Otosquaiob, 2nd in long jump; Charles Skippen, 2nd in discus; Mya Balfe, 3rd in triple jump and 3rd in discus; and Jonah Balfe, 3rd in javelin.

A big congratulations to Ethan, Sadie, and Xavi, who will be representing MSS at OFSAA.

Last week was a spirit week, filled with creatively themed days. Tuesday, May 27 was Tourist Day, where students wore Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses. Wednesday, May 28 was Country vs. Country Club, where students wore either cowboy boots or polo shirts. Thursday, May 29 was Dress As Your Age Day. Grade 12s came dressed as senior citizens, Grade 11s came dressed as middle-aged adults, Grade 10s came dressed as toddlers and Grade 9s came dressed as babies. On Friday, May 30 the week ended with karaoke and limbo in the cafeteria. The Student Council is certainly keeping the energy high for the last few weeks of school!

For those looking ahead to post-secondary, a representative from Laurentian University visited Mr. Smith’s History class during Period 2 on Thursday, May 29. Grade 11s thinking about applying next year were given an overview of academic programs, application timelines and student life at Laurentian. There was also an opportunity to ask questions and gather brochures.

The Writer’s Craft class held a cover art contest to select the front cover image for their upcoming publication titled Convergent Euphony, an anthology of the work students in that class created this year. The contest was open to all MSS students and allowed for submissions in different mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, and mixed media. The deadline for submission was noon on Monday, May 26. The selected artwork will be featured on the book’s cover, with the winning student receiving publication credit and two copies of the printed work. The book is expected to be released later this month.

That wraps up this week’s news from MSS. Keep showing your spirit, supporting your peers, and making these final weeks before summer count!

Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
