LITTLE CURRENT—Co-chairs of the Great Lakes Cruising Club (GLCC), Jib and Debby Turner, joined Cruisers’ Net host Roy Eaton in presenting a framed aerial photograph of the Little Current waterfront to Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Mayor Al MacNevin in appreciation of the reception and support of the municipality during the club’s 60th Anniversary Rendezvous held July 13 to 17 in the Port of Little Current.
“I think it’s a beautiful photo of the downtown waterfront and the GLCC,” said Mayor MacNevin. “It was a wonderful event, and I got to eat a beautiful dinner. People were very happy to see all those boats in our community and we’re always happy to see the rendezvous hosted here.”
“It was wonderful to see all of the boaters from both sides of the border getting together in friendship,” said Ms. Turner. “The fellowship that’s developed through the GLCC is simply amazing.”
“Americans, and everyone, felt welcome, and there were no issues with anything,” she noted.
Ms. Turner noted that the GLCC started in 1934. “This rendezvous is the 60th anniversary rendezvous, but it wasn’t the 60th anniversary of the club,” she said. “The reason the first rendezvous was ever held here was to honour Jib’s grandfather, Grant Turner, who was one of the founding members of the GLCC, and he did so much for the club to get boaters to join the club, who cruised here both Canadian and American.”
“My grandfather went around with boxes of film to Masonic Lodges and Kiwanis Clubs, wherever else people gathered to show people what it looked like here,” said Mr. Turner. “Then he arranged to get them here and it just sort of kicked off.”
The reception the GLCC receives whenever they gather in the Port of Little Current made the town an obvious choice for the 60th anniversary celebration, not to mention the reputation that Georgian Bay and the North Channel have as the best freshwater boating destinations in the world.
