SAULT STE MARIE—“What do you think of these old fellows,” laughs Ken Migwans of M’Chigeeng as he brandishes a photograph of himself and horseshoe team partner Morris Emery of Gore Bay.

The duo took first place at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 tournament in Sault Ste. Marie on August 20 against some pretty stiff competition.

“Some of these guys were real pros,” said Mr. Migwans. “They have a place to play indoors all winter, but we won.”

Experience will tell, and the 79-year-old Mr. Migwans and his 75-year-old partner Mr. Emery have quite a few games under their belts. They play just about every Thursday with the Rainbow Ringers in M’Chigeeng.

This isn’t their first placing on the horseshoe podium either. “We took second place in Haliburton (the Haliburton County Fair) on Thursday,” he beamed. “We have another tournament coming up.”

The Emerick Migwans Memorial Horseshoe Tournament takes place on Saturday, September 10 starting at noon, with registration at 11 am. The entry fee is $15 and there will be a random draw for partners with cash payouts for first, second and third place finishers.
