Ivan Wheale’s newest works launch this weekend at Perivale Gallery

SPRING BAY—To kick-off the new season of Perivale Art Gallery in Spring, Bay, ‘The Art of Passion and Place,’ an exhibition and sale of the newest works of Ivan Wheale, will open on May 17 and continue until the gallery’s seasonal closing on September 14.

“This exciting collection features original works in a variety of dimensions, for every budget and space,” said Shannon McMullan, owner/curator of Perivale Gallery. The collection, “Celebrate Ivan’s great love of the beauty and spirit of the Northern landscape.” 

“Ivan Wheale’s paintings, in watercolours and oils, are strong studies in realism, capturing the atmosphere, texture and nature of the Northern Ontario landscape,” a release notes.

“Ivan was born in Sunderland, England in 1934 and settled in Canada in 1957. After living in Sudbury for a few years, he moved to Manitoulin Island in 1975 where he now lives and works. Ivan is a self-taught artist whose work appears in numerous public and corporate collections including the Queen’s Collection, Windsor Castle, the Government of Ontario, the provincial buildings, Ottawa, and the Lieutenant Governors, Queen’s Park, Toronto.” 

Mr. Wheale, “is the recipient of many awards including an Honorary Degree from Laurentian University, the Rotary International Paul Harris Award, and the Canada Council. He was listed in the American Artists Survey of Leading Contemporaries in 1989. He has held over 94 solo exhibitions including three touring exhibitions circulating Ontario, and a 50-year retrospective at the Centennial Museum, Sheguiandah. He has also contributed to over 65 group exhibitions.

“Ivan’s writing includes The Artist’s Conception, The Manitoulin Expositor, 1985, and a five-year weekly television program in Sudbury. He is a past member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Society of Canadian Artists,” the release continues. 

“Ivan Wheale has been a featured artist at Perivale Gallery on Manitoulin Island since 1981. The images of the new works to be featured in this exciting exhibition will be uploaded to Perivale Gallery’s website perivalegallery.com/ivan-wheale/ by 7 am the morning of the show opening, Saturday, May 17. Inquiries and sales will be welcomed as of 7 am by calling 705-210-0290. Doors open at 10 am.
“Ivan will be in attendance at the gallery for an opening reception from 2-4 pm,” said Ms. McMullan. “Now in his 91st year, Ivan still paints daily with great enthusiasm and is looking forward to greeting guests and friends. We look forward to welcoming everyone to view the outstanding works by this beloved iconic artist.” 

Perivale Gallery’s 2025 hours are: open weekends 10 am to 5 pm (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) May 16-June 13, or by appointment, then open daily 10 am to 5 pm until September 14.
