Letter: Expat thankful for the Island’s warm welcome to visitors

To the Expositor:

One hundred and forty-six years of publishing Manitoulin’s community newspaper! Wow, that’s something to be proud of.

And No. 1 of Vol. 146 was a doozie! Sometimes I can skip through my copy of ‘The Spoz’ in a half hour, but this one kept me reading for  two-and-a-half hours. My kudos to Jaqueline St. Pierre for a well-researched and written article on Ontario’s odious Bill 5, and to Grand Chief Linda Debassige for her excellent response.

There were so many interesting stories; from exciting new businesses starting up, to a new rock duo in Evansville, to a new art show in Gore Bay and a conference for women entrepreneurs, to a proposal for a new system to cook the waste stream that’s being considered by the Central council. And a proposed Amish parochial school! Manitoulin has always been unique, but it’s thrilling to read of so many new ventures in the works.

I agree with your editorial assessment of the “prosperous tomorrow” that appears to be on the horizon.  And as a former resident, now a tourist but always a Haweater, I’m thankful that the Island’s warm welcome to visitors endures.

Cheers,

Mary Nelder
