Even though not many would admit it, MSS students were happy to be back at school. Students flowed through the halls, catching up with friends, saying hi to teachers, and finding their classrooms. Those new to MSS may have gotten lost once or twice, but everyone was eager to help them find their way. Four new staff members also joined the MSS team: teachers Ms. Elgie and Dr. Johnston and counsellors Mr. Trudeau and Ms. Paul.
Amber Wahl, a Grade 9 student from CMPS, said, “My first week of school was incredible. The teachers were amazing and really helpful. I got to meet all sorts of new people and I’m really enjoying it. My favourite thing about high school is being able to learn with my friends. My favourite class is science with Mr. Zegil.”
Ella Stewart, a Grade 9 student from Assiginack, said, “My first week of school was okay. High school is more fun than I thought it would be. My favourite part of school is lunch because I get to see all my friends. My favourite class is science with Mr. Zegil.” Many other Grade 9s have expressed how much they are enjoying their high school experience so far.
When students arrived at MSS on the first day, the school looked its best. The custodial staff worked hard to make sure the school looked as good as new for the return of the students. Ms. Bauer and Mrs. Heinen had their classrooms fully re-done to create an innovative learning experience for students. Grace Cook, a Grade 11 student in Mrs. Heinen’s Sociology class, said, “The classroom looks very modern and creative. It is very mobile making it easier to work in groups, and create new spaces for learning. Some desks have dividers that can be used as white boards, and white boards that are usual for class work and notes.”
A Grade 10 student in Ms. Bauer’s class said, “I think it is a very new age and tech savvy classroom. I think my favourite thing about the new renovations is that there is a large variety of seats, and they’re a lot more comfortable than the seats in other classrooms.”
Students’ Council has their first meeting on Monday where they will be planning upcoming events, such as a fall dance. The theme of the dance will be decided at the meeting. This year’s Students’ Council consists of Co-Prime Ministers Kayla Greenman and Bryce Mastelko, and their council: Garret Gauthier, Nathan Howard, Isaac Gosse, Brynn Kiley, Hailey LeBlanc, Beth Wiwchar, and Pierre Debassige. The group of hard-working students are already coming up with ideas on how to make this school year unforgettable.
SHARE/Go Green and Three Fires Confederacy are organizing a leadership and community building program facilitated by Me to We called Sacred Circle. Sacred Circle educates and works with First Nations, Metis and Inuit youth and the community to build relationships, make positive change, and become leaders in their communities. The program is delivered in partnership with community elders and mentors. SHARE/Go Green is also making fundraising plans for the Kenya Five Pillars project with Me to We.
In the next few weeks, MSS will be busy as boys’ volleyball, girls’ basketball, and cross-country all begin, as well as motivational and school spirit activities. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
