A paradise on earth and we should all be proud of the clean facility and those beautiful sunsets
To the Expositor:
This is in response to the letter of August 13, 2014 from Jack Hicks regarding the Providence Bay marina (‘Writer saddened by negative restrictions at Providence Bay dock,’ page 4).
I don’t know where that guy is coming from but for the last four years there was only improvement at Providence Bay marina
- Fishing from the floating dock: the space is only eight feet wide and you have boats on each side, most of them have a canvas top, and a treble hook makes a nice tear in canvas. A few years ago my boat was the last one on the middle floating dock and I had to repair it four times due to fishermen casting from the dock. This initiative from the dockmaster is well appreciated from boat owners.
- Parking: this was always a problem as the residents around the marina with driveways on the parking lot had to struggle to get out. The visitors were taking the place of a boat and trailer and the fisherman with trailers were sometime taking two spots of parking limiting the room for more trailers. Now with signs and reinforcement of the parking rules there has been great improvement. We now have a location by the marina when we come back from fishing to park and clean your fish.
- Facilities: The large deck that the dockmaster moved from across the street and incorporated into the marina was a stroke of genius. We now can look at the sunset more than five people at the time. We now have decent chairs, tables, umbrellas and picnic tables. I think that is one of the best improvement in the last four years.
- Socializing: I have spent my summers in Providence Bay since 1991 and have seen changes for the better and for the worse over the years. The fish have come back, so have the tourists in Providence Bay, and the dockmaster always makes sure that all the good fishing stories are told—sometimes fish are bigger on the camera, but it is all in good fun. The marina is a welcoming place and a fun place.
- Tournament: We never had a fishing derby properly organized at Providence Bay. Since the marina change hands they have a good turnout of people and every year they make improvements with the help of fisherman. Very good prizes are given to the best fisherman—those prices don’t grow on trees, someone had to go and get them.
I asked many people who use the marina for fishing or tourist activities what they thought of the setup? People said this is paradise on earth and we all should be proud of the clean facility and those beautiful sunsets.
