M’CHIGEENG—Thanks to the generosity of the Manitoulin Island community, the Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) ‘Halloween for Hunger’ event was again a huge success!
“A total of 789 non-perishable food items and $723 in cash donations were collected by students,” said MSS teacher Yana Bauer. “The Manitoulin Island community has always been very supportive of this program with donations.” She pointed out there was also a good, friendly competition among students in their home rooms to collect the most items.
MSS students began collecting non-perishable food items on October 24, said Ms. Bauer. “On Halloween night, students visiting communities around Manitoulin Island went door to door collecting non-perishable food items and donations.”
Ms. Bauer explained, “grocery stores around the Island all offered to let our students borrow shopping carts in the evening for the students to collect items, which is very nice, and a huge help. They have always been very good to allow our students to use the shopping carts. And the Manitoulin community has always been very supportive of this program.”
“MSS has been participating in this program for many years,” said Ms. Bauer. She noted food items collected will go to the Manitoulin Family Resources (MFR) Food Bank in Mindemoya and the Living Well Locker at MSS. Monetary donations will go to the MFR Food Bank.
“During the week students in their home rooms took part in a challenge, to see which home room collected the most food items and donations,” continued Ms. Bauer.
On November 3 students took part in a count of how many items were donated and donations made and then arranged to deliver items to the Manitoulin Food Bank.
The MSS home room class that collected the most items had a pizza party, said Ms. Bauer. Students who took part in the event will also be credited with volunteer hours toward their graduation.
