Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service Police Week open house was a hit

WIIKWEMKOONG—The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) celebrated National Police Week 2025 by hosting an open house event that welcomed community members of all ages, including participation of children and youth from local schools.

“In alignment with this year’s theme, ‘Committed to Serve Together,’ our goal was to underscore the importance of partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve,” said Ron Gignac, WTPS Chief of Police. “We wanted to highlight our dedication not only within our police service but also in collaboration with other community leaders, organizations, and individuals within our community. This approach is crucial for building safer neighbourhoods, where everyone feels valued.”

The open house held May 14, and its activities intended to bring the community together and strengthen the connection between police officers and residents.

There was great attendance with about two hundred people attending, including Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory Chief Tim Ominika and council members, members of the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), all three schools and the local day care.

Among the many events that took place included a parking lot hockey game, a hugely popular bubble machine, and kids having the opportunity to sit on the WTPS four wheelers, something they loved, and were able to climb into a police car to check it out. A local crisis worker provided a talk to the older youth about her work, what she does, and to ask the many questions they had.

There was a barbecue for everyone to enjoy, a draw for a fire put for adults, and three draws for a youth bike, draws for two sets of roller blades along with helmets, shin and elbow pads.

“By fostering strong relationships through open dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect during informal events like this week’s celebration, we aim to reinforce our commitment to creating inclusive environments where safety is paramount,” said WTPS. “Building strong community relationships and trust remains a top priority for WTPS. By demonstrating shared goals and values, we are better equipped to work together toward ensuring our community’s future safety.”
