MINDEMOYA—Mindemoya golfer Noah Thorpe led the way for Manitoulin Island players in the Northeastern Junior Golf Tour by claiming the tour championship on the boys (under 19) side to win the Order of Merit medal.
“Noah is a very nice young man, well respected by the entire group,” stated Andre Lemieux, operations director of the NEJGT last week. He explained that Mr. Thorpe won three of six tournaments this summer, at Cedar Green in Sudbury, Timberwolf Golf Course and a tournament in Parry Sound. He finished second in the tour final event held at Idylwylde Golf Course in Sudbury, the first weekend of August. Noah was narrowly edged out for first place by Ayton Longe, after posting a two round 36-hole score of 76-75.
Mr. Thorpe has another year of high school starting this fall, at Manitoulin Secondary School. “What struck me about Noah in getting to know him is his priorities,” said Mr. Lemieux. “On the same night as a prom party he could attend, instead, he stayed home to study for an exam taking place the following Monday.”
“Noah is an excellent golfer and had a very good season, winning the Order of Merit,” said Mr. Lemieux. He said Noah is likely on track for a division one scholarship at a university in the US.
Amy Smith of Gore Bay, “played in all events on the schedule this year, in the under 19 girls division, which includes a total of six events including the championship at Idylwylde,” said Mr. Lemieux. “She is a great young lady.”
Ms. Smith posted a couple of second place finishes along with a fourth place in the events this season. “She is a super young lady and is a good competitive player, who you can tell plays for the enjoyment of the game. Her father Dan is a volunteer director on the NJGT, super nice and helpful,” said Mr. Lemieux.
Island golfer Rylan Carrick “is a very good competitor and finished fourth overall in the Boys U-19 division,” said Mr. Lemieux. “He is a nice young man, and very respectful. He has a very solid golf game, in his first two tournaments this year he finished fifth and sixth, and improved over the season, finishing in third or fourth place in most events after that.”
