Wiikwemkoong’s Jonathan Fisher.

WIIKWEMKOONG—If you happen to tune into episode three of the Stephen King inspired HBO series ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ currently streaming on Crave, you may see a familiar Island face. Wiikwemkoong actor Jonathan Fisher can be spotted in one scene, albeit only credited as “man in audience.” Watchful viewers will also spot fellow Wiikwemkoong actor Lisa Comarty in the same episode.

Mr. Fisher is Bear Clan and an Anishinaabe from the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory who first got his start at Debajehmujig Storytellers. Among his selected credits include the Thompson Highway hit ‘Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing’ and ‘The Rez Sisters’ not to mention a host of other gigs in his 35-year career.

He has also featured in a host of small films created by the students and staff at M’Chigeeng’s Weengushk Film Institute

Mr. Fisher credits former Debaj artistic director Larry E. Lewis baa as his mentor and his agent, Janine Oloman of Sudbury’s 46th Parallel Management for much of his theatrical success.

His very first appearance on stage was at Debajehmujig, but his first performance in front of an audience was in 1990, singing ‘Stairway to Heaven’ on Wiky TV5. Mr. Fisher is also an accomplished musician and can often be found playing his drums with local bands such as the Johnny Cash Tribute and Wiiky 3.

When it comes to what advice he can give youth considering a stage or film career, Mr. Fisher doesn’t hesitate.

“Get training,” he said. “In this business training opportunities, especially for Indigenous youth, have never been more available.” Mr. Fisher notes that, even after three decades of acting experience, he still takes classes.

“I even took training as a dancer,” he said. “My advice? Do everything! It shapes you as an artist.”
